For 10 years, Crystal Precious has been co-producing stage shows, corporate events & parties, the past 5 of which have been spent with an intense focus on burlesque. Tips & tricks about venues, stages, sound, lights, budgets, payouts, licenses, etc… and it’ll be chock full of delightfully avoidable horror stories, battle scars (literally) and victory photos! Producing shows can sometimes be challenging & stressful… she hopes her experiences can be helpful to anyone wanting to give the burlesque community a platform.

A lecture by renowned UBC Professor Becki Ross on Vancouver's post-war erotic entertainment – female burlesque and striptease, from 1945 to 1980
Did you know Sally Rand performed here in Vancouver? So did Gypsy Rose Lee! Come to a fabulous FREE lecture by UBC's Becki Ross!For the past eight years, Becki Ross has been researching a book on post-war erotic entertainment – female burlesque and striptease, from 1945 to 1980. Extensive archival and interview-based research forms the core of her investigation. Her illustrated talk explores themes of Vancouver’s racialized east/west divide, dancers’ working conditions and efforts to unionize, the roles of jazz musicians as accompanists, and “the tease” in an era that predates lap dancing, champagne rooms, and stage fees.Becki Ross teaches Women’s & Gender studies and Sociology in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at the University of British Columbia. She has a long history of activism and advocacy for sex workers’ rights as well as being active in anti-racist struggles, and reproductive choice.

Learn to be a Damsel in Dis-Dress
Instructor(s): Miss Ruby Slippers
Miss Ruby has traveled throughout Canada and The US, choreographing performers from Ballet dancers to Burlesque, to Drag and Cabaret artists. She has been teaching "The Art of Seduction" to professionals and beginners in her Burlesque Retreats and home parties for the past 15 years, and believes that connecting with what lies beneath,(both our clothes and our manners) is the route to finding our true selves!
This three hour intensive is Jam packed with all you will need to know to become a true "Damsel in Dis-Dress". The first hour, we'll explore the power uncovering your burlesque identity, ( true goddess self). The second hour, we will explore how the use of proper hair, make up and costuming/props can put you into the "skin" of your creation and lastly, we will create a movement/choreography piece which will bring your fabulous creation to life!
** All costuming and props will be provided by "Miss Slippers". Please bring your own heels, make up and hair accessories and if you have one, a small mirror. Make up and hair demonstration will be presented on a volunteer participant, using Miss Ruby's products.

*as this workshop runs over the lunch hour, please bring a small bagged lunch. Some small goodies and provisions will be provided by the instructor as well! BRING WATER!
